Radishes, Snow Castles, and Bodypainting…?

Traveling is rewarding because, aside from the obvious pleasures of shopping and eating, it allows you to both think from a different perspective and learn about other people’s lifestyles. If you’re contemplating taking a trip or, maybe like me, just creating a bucket list for the future, here are, in my opinion, the top three crazily, quirky festivals around the world you should definitely include in your journey. So, grab some snack and let’s take a trip around the world without leaving the comfort of bed!

Number 3- La Noche de los Rábanos (The Night of the Radishes)

Location: Oaxaca, Mexico
Event Dates: December 23rd
Level of Awesome: You can play with your food

You might dread the sight of radishes on your dinner plate, but during the La Noche de los Rábanos celebration you’ll be jumping for joy at the sight of the seemingly never-ending vendors displaying their intricately carved masterpieces. Artisans specially grow enormous radishes that can be up to fifty centimeters long for this amazing event. Some sculptors choose to engrave native scenes of the Mayans; others carve local wildlife, while still others transform the ugly vegetables into adorable little dolls. At the end of all the fun, a winner is chosen who gets twelve thousand pesos! Besides encouraging creative talent, this festival is even more amazing (if that’s possible) because it effectively combats a saying we’ve all heard at the dinner table: never play with your food.

Number 2- Harbin Ice and Snow Festival

Location: Harbin, China
Event Dates: January 5th to February 28th
Level of Awesome: Truly Amazing

If you’re a cold weather junkie, this icy festival is definitely right up your alley. To get an idea of the scenery, picture a cross between the icy wonderland of Frozen and the bewitching charm of Tangled. During the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, gargantuan architectural masterpieces are built with influences ranging from Chinese fairy tales to notable present day landmarks. Surrounded by such beautifully enthralling castles, your inner Disney princess is sure to act out. I almost can’t handle the coolness of this festival…pun intended.

Number 1- World Bodypainting Festival

Location: Seeboden, Carinthia, Austria
Event Dates: June 28th to July 5th
Level of Awesome: An idea of sheer ingeniousness

Love all things artsy? Well then, mark your calendars! Lasting a whole week, the bodypainting celebrations kick off with fifty unique workshops hosted by WB Academy. Then, in the last few days, the actual festival begins with various painting competitions and events. If you’re feeling especially adventurous (and possibly scandalous) you’ll be happy to know that you can actually volunteer to be a bodypainting model! The exquisite combination of electrifying body images paired with innovative musical talent, from around the world, make this festival a MUST!

Hope you’ve gotten some ideas for your next vacation extravaganza and if you’re like me and lacking sufficient funding, hopefully you’ve gotten more ideas to daydream about!
